Carnegie Mellon. Point Park. USC. Syracuse. Texas State. Boston Conservatory. Manhattan School of Music. Elon. Florida State. Twenty more. They all close on the same day — and what they will see is a recording.
I have done the vocal production on more than seventy-five records. I know what a voice sounds like coming out of a speaker in a room where somebody is deciding.
I am a vocal coach who makes records. For a prescreen, that difference is the whole thing.
I spent two years as the vocal coach for Kidz Bop. Young singers, every week, to a professional standard and a deadline. Yours would not be my first seventeen‑year‑old.
I wrote the music and lyrics for Welcome to Ballyhoo — seventeen songs, represented by CAA. Big hooks, ragtime piano, stacked harmonies, full chorus numbers. Old school Broadway, with Broadway performers on the recordings.
Nearly every prescreen asks for a pre‑1965 piece, and it is the one most applicants sing worst — raised on contemporary theatre and pop, then asked for a ballad in an idiom they have never lived in. That idiom is one of mine.
Hear it — the Welcome to Ballyhoo compilation
The most common reason a good singer doesn’t clear a prescreen is the wrong song — wrong key, wrong fit, wrong school. Twenty years of choosing and shaping material for specific voices is the trade I actually practise.
A panel hears a file, not a room. Balance, take selection, where the voice sits, what the microphone forgives and what it exposes. That is a producer’s job, and it is what I have done on seventy-five records.
Clearing the prescreen earns a live audition — a different skill entirely. The cut, the book, an accompanist you have never met, the callback. We prepare for that once the submission is in.
I am taking ten students through to December 1. That is honest arithmetic rather than a sales line — it is what fits alongside the private calendar between now and the deadline.
“Mark Renk is the only vocal coach I’ve used for the past 20 years.”
Ninety minutes and a repertoire plan. If you go on to the full programme within two weeks, it comes off the price.
